National Service Agency Announces Appointments

Washington D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service announced the appointments of two top social sector experts to key positions – Dr. Erwin Tan, Director of Senior Corps and Strategic Advisor for Veterans and Military Families, and John Kim, Senior Advisor for Change Management.

“The need for a robust answer to the persistent problems facing communities has never been greater,” said Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the Corporation. “These new additions to our team will ensure that we have the right people and strategies in place to help us realize the impact in communities that will transform lives for the better.”

Below is background on the two appointees:

Dr. Erwin Tan - Director of Senior Corps and Strategic Advisor for Veterans and Military Families

Dr. Tan is a board certified Internist and Geriatrician.Prior to joining the Corporation, he served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was an attending physician at the Division of Geriatric Medicine. He was also a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health where he was a co-investigator on the Baltimore Experience Corps Trial, a five-year randomized controlled trial of the health benefits of older adult volunteering and a case controlled trial of the academic benefits for children who have older volunteers in their classrooms. Tan's expertise on methods to engage older Americans will prove invaluable as the agency prepares to expand service opportunities to broader communities and better leverage the skills of our nation's Baby Boomers to address national challenges.

John Kim - Senior Advisor for Change Management

John Kim joins the Corporation from the Annie E. Casey Foundation where, as the Director of Grants Management, he devised a new centralized grantmaking process and department structure that standardized grantmaking practices across the Foundation's program areas.Kim's experiences will be an asset to the Corporation, given the increased focus on producing measureable impact toward solving our nation's toughest problems.
